What a beautiful day. First day of VBS!! We had a good number of kids come, and let me tell you, it was quite an adventure…with one little girl in particular. Her name is Kelayah. She is wild. She doesn’t like story time, so she runs around and in and out of rooms and screams and laughs and wants to use the church as her playground. I’m going to be a teacher someday, so I thought I’d get a little practice in with trying to calm her down and get her to focus. Yeah, right. Once you learn her style and personality and what makes her tick a little bit, it’s a little easier to get her to focus. We had fun on the playground during recreation time, and during snacks the kids cooled down. The craft for the day was plastic boomerangs that we painted with “paintbrushes.” The paintbrushes worked well for a while, but the boys preferred using their fingers, so it turned into finger-painting, which was fine by me! I feel that over all, VBS was a huge success.
We were supposed to be painting the building for the Parks and Recreation camp, but if we haven’t learned by now that nothing goes according to plan, we will have learned it by the end of this week! It didn’t work out for us to do that today, so unfortunately we had to go to the beach in the afternoon. I went snorkeling immediately with a group, and we actually covered a pretty good distance. We saw two stingrays up on the shore, schools of fish that you can swim through and not be touched, a lot of sea urchins, and my favorite- a shark. Well, okay, it wasn’t my favorite at the time….at the time I practically pushed Jared into it I was so scared. But it was cool to have seen that! After snorkeling we took a nap on the beach, hung out in the water, and the headed back to camp.
Happy Birthday to John! We all dressed in black for his 40th birthday, and he, oblivious, dressed in a pink polo. Rene had to tell him about the trend, he didn’t even notice. Dinner was wonderful; we finished early and headed to the beach for a meeting. After the meeting a few of us read what we thought John’s tombstone would say. We laughed and had fun, t hen headed back to get an early sleep. Thank God for that.
God-sighting for the day was the community of people I am here with….my friends here are so flexible, laid back, and willing to serve. I love being in this environment, serving the Lord, and working alongside people I admire.

Hey Allie,
ReplyDeleteI'm glad that you are on this trip! It has been refreshing to read your journal. The last sentence of this post you wrote made me smile.
I wanted to leave you with a scripture before tomorrow. You're all in my prayers!
-"The LORD is good,a refuge in times of trouble. He cares for those who trust in him." (Nahum 1:7)
