Today started off beautifully…I got to sit on a picnic bench right in front of the beach as I did my Bible study. If you haven’t been to St.John, it’s hard to describe with words how beautiful the scenery is…I feel like I would not be doing it justice to try and explain what I saw. Surrounded by the splendor of God’s creation, I read over Psalm 40. The short time I spent there set the tone for the entire day. Day 2 of VBS and it was awesome. The kids were crazy, as usual, but they had a blast. It’s so encouraging to see even the older kids enjoying themselves, yelling the song lyrics as loud as they can, and really getting into the activities. Kaleyah, of course, was allll over the place. But I think that made everything more...interesting.
One of my favorite things is to watch Holly and Anna lead the songs. Today we did the song called “Follow,” and it has a pretty strong beat to it. Anna and Holly get so into it, it makes me laugh while I’m trying to do the motions. Anna did such a good job teaching today, she had the kids do wind noises, act like they were sitting in a boat, and act out the emotions of the characters. They answered all her questions and seemed to enjoy her lesson!!
Quote of the day from Tristan: “I’m just trying to keep all the kids in a good mood.” This is coming from a little Austrian four year old with glasses and a big grin, when we asked him if he was having fun playing outside with the other kids. I love love love love getting to work with the kids here on the island…it’s so fun when they warm up to you, or just decide to attach to you because you are here and you love them. For example, there’s a little boy named Sayeed, and his sister is named Jayda. As soon as they learned my name, Jayda drew “I love Allie” pictures and Sayeed made me sit by him every time our group moved places. It makes me so happy that we get the opportunity to love on these kids, just because we can!
I stayed behind with Kyle, Julie, Steph, and Jared to stack some books in the library. While we were in there, Julie found a machete by almost stepping on it. What is a machete doing in a pastor’s office? I’m not sure….but it was there. Then we saw three iguanas, and the boys tried to catch them, of course. Kyle decided to climb the tree after it…and while he was up there he picked some gnips for us. Gnips are these crazy little fruits covered in a chewy shell. You take off the shell, and the inside is a huge seed with a strange consistency of fruit around it. Kyle described it as snot…but it tastes better, I think. Then we went and joined the rest of our team over at the Parks and Recreation building in order to paint. We listened to John Mayer, Jack Johnson, and Michael Buble while we painted the building Straw Yellow and a deep red. Peter and I stayed behind to wash off all of the paint supplies. About half way through washing everything off, we realized that the place we were standing had no drain or outlet….so we ended up wading in a sea of strawberry ice cream soup (at least that’s what it looked like.) But we had fun playing the “if you really knew me, you would know that….(insert fun fact here)” game.
After painting we headed back to Cinnamon Bay, showered, and headed to Maho camping ground with Scott Drennan. He cooked us hamburgers and hotdogs, and we enjoyed the pretty view from a gazebo overlooking the ocean. I was beat at dinner, but we went back to the beach to have our meeting and I woke up quite a bit. We tried to play the blues game on the beach with Doug’s guitar….but none of us were very good at it, besides Jeff and John. The blues game is where Doug plays a blues lick, and one person says a line in order to begin a story. Then the next person says a line, and so on and so forth, in the pattern of an AB rhyme scheme. Well, we sucked at it. So that didn’t last long. But it was awesome being together and being goofy. WE did miss Julie, though…she got a bug bite on her foot, took some Benadryl, and was off dreaming by like 9. It’s okay though, there will be plenty of other opportunities for fellowship this week.
