Second day of VBS. Today started out wet, it rained last night while we were asleep. Luckily, not many things were wet in our camp. We got up and sang at the pavilion, as usual. I really enjoy the morning songs. It’s a good way to get your heart ready for the day. I had gotten up and done an early Bible study yesterday morning but this morning it was wet and nasty and I succumbed to the longing just to stay on my air mattress.. This morning at VBS went great. The kids were ready to have fun and had great attitudes all day! I love doing the fun group songs like J-O-Y - the new “noise” part goes like this: HUH!, WOOP WOO!, BUZZZZZZ, WHACK!, EWW!!, GUPPY!! The kids love it too. After VBS was over, we got ready to go to the rec center to paint it, and I was uploading these blasted journals. Some people (including me) stayed behind to finish up journals and move some books. Kyle, Steph, Julie, Allie and I found some beast iguanas that were awesome. In the process of uploading the journals I realized that the method we were using had errors in it and was posting doubles and triples of some journals and it looked really crappy and sometimes even bad enough that you couldn’t figure out what was what. So, I re-uploaded all the journals onto a blogger. That took forever. In fact, I didn’t even get to go to the work site at all. They came sweaty and tired and picked me up out of the air conditioning. I felt awful because I had sat in the A/C all day while they worked hard and sweated all day. Tomorrow I really want to do some of the hard work. After we went back to the camp site, everyone had about 45 minutes to shower and get ready to leave. I didn’t have to shower because I didn’t get dirty or sweaty, so I took the time to do my Bible study. I went to a picnic table next to one of the beach entrances to do it. As I was sitting at the picnic table writing in my journal, a little boy put a loaf of bread, peanut butter and honey on the other end of the (small) table and proceeded to make a sandwich. It was a little weird at first for him to randomly sit down there, but I asked his name and talked to him for a little bit. I can’t remember it to write it here, but I’m hoping I will get to meet him again. Anyway, we talked for a bit and I got back to writing in my prayer journal, and he asked me what I was writing. I explained what it was and how I was recording my conversation with God so that I can always look back at it and remember. He didn’t say much, just kept eating his sandwich. As I was packing my stuff up to meet everyone at the pavilion, he asked me what the books were that I had. I told him they were a devotional book and a Bible. I asked him if he had a Bible or if anyone in his family did, and he said no, his mom doesn’t believe in God. I then asked him if he did, and he said “Kinda, but not really..” We talked for a little while longer, and I explained why I thought the island of St. John itself is proof of a creator, and read him Genesis 1, and he proceeded to get a broken tree branch to use as a pointing stick to an invisible chalkboard to explain to me some very twisted version of the Big Bang. I wish I could have stayed there and talked to him a lot longer but I had to go meet the group. I really hope I will get the chance to see him again while I’m here.
Tonight we had dinner at Maho with Scott Drennan. It is one of the most beautiful views in St. John I have seen so far. We had a great dinner with great conversation and then we all watched a small lizard feeding on bugs attracted to a light in the pavilion. That was sweet. Later that night we had our group meeting on the beach which I look forward to every night. I can’t wait for tomorrow – plan of salvation is being presented!
