Doug - Day 4

What a day! This morning started out with another great breakfast of fresh fruits and pastries from the local grocery store. It really is great to start out the day with everyone in the room talking and preparing for the morning.
Today was my day to teach VBS for the older kids. The theme for the day was “Worship Him” and I was really excited to teach. The kids really surprise you. Just when you think you’re wasting your time and they aren’t listening, you pose a question and everyone in the group responds with an answer and proves you wrong. I am not a great teacher, and I know this about myself. Even things I know very well, I don’t teach well. It’s just not one of my gifts, but in this informal environment, teaching really wasn’t that difficult. Like I mentioned before, it can be very frustrating at times because you aren’t sure that they are listening, but if you really listen to them and watch them, God is very present here and is visibly working in their hearts. It is amazing to be a part of.
The kids have gotten much more comfortable with us now, and are calling us by name and grabbing hold of us and singing and playing with us. It’s a lot of fun. Every morning before worship starts at VBS we meet all the kids down on the playground and play games with them, today we played four square and it was hilarious. While some kids knew the rules, others thought the object was to bounce the ball…anywhere. After some slight coaching, we got things under control and the kids had a great time with it. At rec. time we’ve been playing wiffle ball and now get requests to play it with them!
We started our work project today and it was hot! We are painting the “Parks and Recreations” building right across the street from the fire station that was painted last year. While the sun was hot and we were somewhat exhausted from the day so far, we had a blast. Not one complaint from anyone in the group! We got a lot done on it and really don’t lack a whole lot to finish!
Scott grilled us a great dinner of hamburgers and hotdogs up at Maho and we got to watch a beautiful sunset. God is good!
Our group meetings on the beach at night have been great. It’s so cool how everyone looks forward to the meetings so they can share about their personal experiences of the day, rather than dreading them because they’re tired. After our meeting we stayed at the beach and I brought my guitar down. Jeff and I attempted to teach the group how to play the “Blues Game” but….while hilarious, it was unsuccessful. Maybe next time…
